Where is your family off to this October school holidays?

If you haven’t booked anything yet, fear not – you’re not too late to book an idyllic houseboat holiday on the River Murray.

Wow Houseboats still have space available on Wow Factor during the holiday break, including on October 3-13.

Timeslots are also available during the first two weeks of the next school term if you’d like to extend your time off.

Murray Bridge News readers can get a special deal, too.

Mention us when you book your October getaway and you’ll get an exclusive rate of 25 per cent off.

WHAT CAN KIDS DO ON A HOUSEBOAT HOLIDAY?

What can’t they do?

The river is ripe with eye-opening experiences, not to mention opportunities for quality time with the family free of distractions.

Try a spot of birdwatching with the two pairs of binoculars on board, and see if you can identify the species you see in the birdwatching book.

Jump in a double kayak and go fishing, the breeze in your face, the sound of water lapping against the hull, with the fishing equipment provided.

For young thrill-seekers, bring your own waterskiing or wakeboarding gear – or rent some for an extra cost – and get the adrenaline pumping.

Set up a campfire on the riverbank at night with the provided firewood, outdoor cooking equipment, torches and heated deck chairs – yep, you heard us.

Before you head back to one of the 12 berths on board Wow Factor, spend some time stargazing, taking in the majesty of the universe from the River Murray International Dark Sky Reserve.

And if the wonders of nature aren’t your flavour, you can always play one of the board games or watch one of the 200-plus DVDs provided, surf the internet, or explore some of the destinations along the river, including Old Tailem Town and Monarto Safari Park.

ARE HOUSEBOATS SAFE FOR YOUNG CHILDREN?

Wow Factor is about as safe as you can get.

All sliding doors and windows are able to be locked to prevent little ones from finding their way out of the cabin.

Child-proof balustrades and self-closing gates with lockable latches are installed all the way around the boat, giving parents an extra layer of security and peace of mind.

Life jackets suitable for children are provided for your stay: eight for children weighing between 15 and 40 kilograms, and two for toddlers who weigh 10-15kg.

Plus it doesn’t hurt that Wow Factor is big enough to accommodate several families together, meaning you can take turns watching the kids in between dips in the spa.

Parents will still need to exercise caution, of course, and take care to supervise their children; and it’s recommended that children wear lifejackets at all times when they’re out on the deck of the boat.

But you can be assured of a safe and worry-free getaway.
